WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — The Wilmington Police Department is launching a new initiative aimed at recognizing people who make a positive difference in their community.

The program, called Operation Bright Spot, allows WPD officers to surprise people performing acts of kindness with $100 debit cards as a way to thank them for their contributions.

The initiative focuses on recognizing everyday acts of generosity, whether someone is helping a neighbor, supporting a person facing challenges or finding other ways to make Wilmington a better place.

“Law enforcement is about building relationships with our community, strengthening our city, protecting those around us, and recognizing the people who make Wilmington a better, safer place to live,” said Police Chief Ryan Zuidema. “Operation Bright Spot gives us an opportunity to celebrate those individuals and remind our community that even small acts of kindness can make a lasting impact.”

Police say the program is intended to highlight positive actions that might otherwise go unnoticed while strengthening relationships between officers and the community.

Operation Bright Spot was made possible through donations from an anonymous donor and the Wilmington Police Department Recreation Association.
