When should kids stay home from school? MedStar doctor explains

As illnesses spread among school-aged children, parents often struggle to determine when it’s safe to send their kids back to school after being sick.

According to a MedStar Health emergency room pediatrician, there are some factors parents can use to consider when kids should return to school.

“Wait until they don’t have a fever for 24 hours. Wait until they’re not coughing up so much that it’s going to affect their learning,” Dr. Alicia Bazzano said.

The ER doctor also said parents should take into consideration all the symptoms, including vomiting or significant diarrhea.

“Once those are over, after 24 hours without fever, you don’t have to wait until every symptom is gone completely,” Bazzano added.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, kids are staying home more often, Bozzano said.

CDC data also shows that after the pandemic, around 1 in 4 kids missed at least 10% of school days.
